Communicating with the Fins
Before we share our opinions about the communication with the Fins we would love to point out the difference we make between communicating with Finnish men and Finnish women. The reason therefore is that we are still young and healthy males from Belgium. This indicates that if we communicate with Finnish women, there will always be and underlying intention especially because we are on an Erasmus exchange project.
Communication with Finnish men
It looks like, perhaps because of the fact that we had to communicate with people located in one of the coldest places on earth, we literally had to “break the ice” over and over again. Our impression was that we had to start every conversation by ourselves. We had to come up with intentions and topics over and over again. Do not get us wrong, we think that Finnish men are very interesting people but you just first need a spark to set them on fire. One of the possibilities to get them started is loads of beer. Then they are like waterfalls, sprinkling words all over you. And one of the stereotypes about Finnish people is that they do not like small talk. Now in discos this is not the fact at all.
Another way to start a conversation with Finnish men is by gaining respect. For example at the gym, if they see you are taking the job serious you gain more respect and by that more access to a possible conversation. Also with school tasks, if you are doing a good job they think you are interesting and they like to spend time with you and to talk with you.
Communication with Finnish women
Women are a completely other topic. In this case we would like to give the next following tip: camouflage! This means that if you want to communicate with a Finnish girl it is all about the right looks and right charisma. Koen for example is the best camouflaged guy in our group of exchange students. He looks just like Finnish men. He is bold, he has a beard and he does have tattoos. Local inhabitants of Rovaniemi often start to talk Finnish with hem because they belief he is one of them. For Koen it is very easy to start to communicate with Finnish girls because of his Finnish looks and his good intentions.
On the other hand we got guys like Sam. When they go out they dress up according to central European standards. Nice shoes and nice shirts. This results in more negative feelings towards them. Finnish girls think they are arrogant and that they consider the Finnish girls as easy to get. If you combine this with some smooth talk you can go home! If you want to communicate with Finnish girls, you should respect them not only for their beautiful appearance but also for their inner values. Our tip for communicating with Finnish girls is to fly under the radar and just get yourself a low profile.
